They also found four bears housed in appalling conditions showing obvious signs of malnourishment and one bear suffering from advanced cataracts.
Following the visit, Animals Asia has contacted the director to call for urgent veterinary attention for these bears. We have offered to meet with the director to discuss their management and husbandry, and provide advice on veterinary treatment, appropriate housing, environmental enrichment, and improved food and nutrition to enhance their overall health and welfare.
In order to encourage the first steps in this process, we have sent a copy of our “General husbandry and management practices for Asiatic black bears” and hope that this paper can lead to improvements for the management not only of the bears, but will benefit all animals housed at Shenzhen Safari Park.
