Update on River House and Bamboo House residents

Bears settle down in new surroundings

After just over a week in their new homes, Bear Manager Anna reports back on how the new occupants have settled in.

“All of them seem to love their new home but it is possibly most obvious with Crystal, who, when she was first unloaded from her transport cage, walked straight up to a basket (which are lower to the ground to accommodate the bears with mobility issues) and climbed into it like she has always done this. She had not been seen in a basket in House 6 for some time now, as she found it difficult to climb up to the higher beds. It must be lovely to be finally sleeping in a comfy basket instead of lying on a wet and often dirty floor! Then today she amazed me when she climbed on top of the concrete tunnel to enjoy a piece of apple and a boomer ball covered with a yummy smear. She looked so content!

Asia has been her lovely self and climbs up on the play structure with ease. The team places pieces of fruit all along the horizontal middle beam and Asia balances all along it to collect the food, holding it in her mouth until she gets to the end, where she sits enjoying it all. She has not made friends yet with her gorgeous neighbors Kroenchen and Bamse and makes it very clear with a loud grumble that she prefers her own company for now.

Kroenchen, Asia and Bamse are new neighbours with their own mini-enclosures at Bamboo House.

Kroenchen is just gorgeous and has been making the most of her enclosure so far, climbing on the play structure, sleeping on the fire hose hammock and picking through the digging pit substrate to find any yummy treats the bear workers have hidden there for her.

Bamse is just gorgeous! He has gained some much needed weight and looks very healthy, with a shiny coat and bright and inquisitive eyes. We feared he might be nervous when moved to Bamboo House so we moved him in the morning to have some time to settle in before the other bears arrived in the afternoon. But he has shown that being at the center for a while now has given him more confidence and he was eager to check out his new surroundings.

His first couple of days in the enclosure were a bit daunting but he now happily runs outside the moment the bear workers ring the bell at the back of the enclosure. He finds all his food and is able to stretch all the way to reach even the highest placed enrichment. I still have to see him climb the actual play structure – but why bother if you can stretch instead!

Jurgen and Nic enjoy good company and less competition.

The area is just lovely, positioned next to the river, in a quiet corner of the center and everyone, staff and bears alike seem to like it very much!”
